A Letter from MedMates’ Executive Director to Culminate 2018

December 20, 2018

MedMates Colleagues and Friends:

It has been a great year of growth and transformation for Rhode Island’s Life Sciences community.  I am very excited about the future of Life Sciences in our state and MedMates’ success as a growing vibrant hub to help bring much needed job growth, revenue and recognition to Rhode Island.  As the sole Life Sciences trade organization for RI, MedMates is growing our organization’s efforts to provide valuable guidance on resources, entrepreneurial connectivity, policy information, investment opportunities, talent development, educational programs and networking.  True to our mission, we continue to bring all the various constituents within our ecosystem together and to serve as one voice to represent the growth and advancement of RI Life Sciences.

Over the past year, we celebrated many accomplishments with our partners, funders, sponsors and members.  We held our second Life Sciences Expo which was attended by more than 350 people and featured industry-leading speakers and world-class exhibitors.  With the RI BioHub Group, we performed a deep inventory of existing ecosystem enablers in RI demonstrating the foundation is in place to grow, attract and retain Life Sciences companies, both large and small.  And, as the state’s designated BIO affiliate, we represented RI at the 2018 BIO International Convention and helped to connect RI Life Sciences companies with global industry leaders and essential resources.

As exciting as it is to look back at 2018, 2019 promises to hold even more possibility for the growth of our Life Sciences community here in RI.  In January, we’ll be launching our Life Sciences Leadership Development Program in partnership with Real Jobs Rhode Island and Leadership RI where we will train employees from AmgenEpiVax, Rhode Island Quality Institute and Ximedica in fundamental leadership skills.  This training will provide the opportunity for the companies to develop and retain their key talent while advancing their growth and expansion in RI.  In partnership with the RI BioHub Group, we’ll be announcing the release of the report, “Growing the RI Innovation Ecosystem” to provide strategic recommendations and short and longer-term action steps to grow our Life Sciences ecosystem.  Furthermore, as part of implementing a comprehensive regional approach to Life Sciences ecosystem development, we’ll be collaborating with our northeast BIO affiliates, BioCT, Bioscience Association of Maine (BIOME), Massachusetts Biotechnology Council (MassBio)New Hampshire Tech Alliance and Vermont Biosciences Alliance to offer innovative programs and services to area Life Sciences companies.

MedMates is here to serve you, your company, your institution and to further your success in Rhode Island.  It will be a pleasure to meet with all of you throughout 2019.  Please feel free to reach out to me anytime with ideas, comments or questions.  We look forward to supporting your career, your company, and your organization and making Rhode Island a vital and recognized Life Sciences hub.

Sincerely,

Carol Malysz
Executive Director
